This could be a trick question. Or maybe not! I guess it really depends on what you value more between Quantity and Quality of the experiences and possessions you are seeking.

The founders at Soen Audio were brought together by their obsessive attention to detail in products we used. Us quirky engineers and designers had another interesting habit in common, we would very quickly become dissatisfied with what was good enough for us the other day! We were always trying to create yet better solutions and explore how much further can we take the listening experience for music and movies (without going to the audiophile extremes where you can choose between a new car and a pair of speakers!) So driven by our passion to constantly innovate and raise the bar for Consumer Audio, we left one of the world’s largest audio companies to start Soen in California. With Soen we embarked on our relentless pursuit for perfection because good wasn’t enough for us. Our mission is to bring enriched sound to our fellow explorers who seek the best in their experiences and choose better over bigger.
What do you seek?
If fitting into the mainstream is important to you, it would make perfect sense to pick your restaurants, music, fashion and gadgets based on pop culture. Or in other words “whatever is popular among the masses”, which quickly leads to few (popular) options offered by big companies that own major market shares in their respective segments. In order to be attractive and relevant to their customers, these companies usually focus on what makes them work “their Size”, as Size also implies popularity. So their focus and capital investments offer better returns by creating an image of being bigger than their competitors. At such companies driving (perceived) Growth via marketing, and launching feature rich products (to appeal to a wider customer base) often overrule Innovation and Quality when it comes to their strategic boardroom choices.
But if you are more interested in exploring fresh and better alternatives in your experiences, you will be drawn to smaller brands that choose differently. Such companies understand they are catering to a much smaller customer base that’s also very picky and demanding. So the only edge these smaller brands can have is to offer differentiated and superior products, because they stand no chance to win the size game against industry giants. This realization helps these boutique brands prioritize quality, innovation and customer service over marketing and feature rich products.
